Oakwood Wind Phone
Oakwood Cemetery, Raleigh, North Carolina
This wind telephone is located in Raleigh’s beautiful Oakwood Cemetery which opened in 1869. After entering the cemetery, continue straight, cross the bridge to the right, and park near the office in the parallel parking spots there (you can see our black Volvo parked in the background). Cross over the bridge again on foot and turn to the right. Almost immediately, there is a set of marble pavers on the right that will lead you to the wind telephone.
This phone is a straightforward one! To make it, you have a larger back piece to mount the phone then two side pieces. Atop that is another piece of wood serving as a roof with shingles atop it to protect it from weather. It is mounted on a post. There is a laminated page explaining wind telephones and a QR code to a poem of which I have posted a photo.
