Olympia Wind Telephone
Olympia, Washington, United States
This is a very famous wind telephone located in Squaxin Park in Olympia, Washington. The address is 2600 East Bay Drive Northeast, Olympia, WA 98506, United States. Per Sandra Miller, who also provided these photographs, it is right off the one-way road in the park and down an unmarked path. It is a very easy, flat walk but hard to find if you don’t know where it is. She also states ‘turn right at the Exit North sign, drive to the top of the hill and park — trailhead starts from the road right before you start to head back down.’ You do not need a pass to go to the park.
This phone was placed in 2021 in memory of a four-year-old girl named Joelle Rose Sylvester, a friend of the daughter of the creator, Corey Dembeck. The telephone is famous for being featured on Sunday Morning, a nationally syndicated morning show on CBS.
Mr Dembeck is a carpenter, but this is a straightforward construction. It requires a post, either a 4x4 or something more natural like this one; a square of wood to attach the phone and plaque; and an angled roof to protect the phone. Remember to place the post deep enough with enough concrete to hold the heavy wood up. This one also features beautiful carving to identify what it is - you should be able to find someone in your area who can do this if you’d like this kind of decor, or you can nail up a separate piece of wood from someone at a place like Etsy.
