Pillwillop Telephone of the Wind
Wolcott, Connecticut, United States
This wind phone was visited by Caroline Dowd, a friend of Allison. In her words:
‘The phone is located on the property of a lovely therapeutic farm [located at 1089B Woodtick Rd, Wolcott, CT 06716, United States]. When you pull in the drive, you should park to the left by the big red barn. On the side of the barn is the farm map, which helps direct a little bit. Basically, there is a pink trail (starts “below” at the barn) and a yellow trail (starts “above” at the main building used for therapy), and they loop together. You can follow either to find the blue trail, which leads to the wind phone. You 100% need to wear boots because it is muddy and a bit mucky. Bug spray isn’t a bad idea either (this place is literally located on Woodtick Road).
‘The lady who created the wind phone is Lisa Corson (lisa@docwarren.org), and she is a therapist there. When I reached out to her, she was very happy to walk me out once she finished up with a patient but said that the trails are open to the public and anyone can come and go as long as it’s daylight. There is a barred owl who lives in the tree, so they often find little animal bones on the ground beneath the wind phone and they put it on the frame. The frame is a bench that used to be on her property but fell apart, so she thought it would be nice to put it to another use. It’s dedicated to her father and grandmother.
‘I have a feeling that anyone who wanted to go could 100% reach out and get support from someone at the center to get out there if they felt overwhelmed about trying to navigate it themselves (like I did).’
This one is delightfully straightforward - choose a decorated or otherwise special piece of wood, attach the phone to the wood, and mount it on either a tree or prop on posts.
