Sharon’s Telephone of the Wind

Leitchfield, Kentucky, United States

The Leitchfield Wind Telephone is located at 970 Woodhaven Lane, Leitchfield, Kentucky 42754. To access it, park in front of the garbage cans at the turnaround then walk down the golf cart path and through the woods toward the water. The phone is on the right. Thank you to this phone’s steward, Debbie Kinberger Mullins, for specific directions to the phone!

This phone is dedicated to Debbie’s late friend, Sharon Martin, who lived in the house adjacent to the area where the wind telephone is. It was the first house built in the neighborhood! Debbie is a delightful host who showed us around the area, and we all went swimming in the lake during our visit. It’s absolutely beautiful, but the water is very low as of June 2023 due to a dam leak that won’t be fixed for six years. Because of this, the pretty cliffs beyond the phone are pretty high with exposed rock, so please be careful if you decide to explore the area around the phone. It’s also not a good idea to boat to this, as the docks are largely landed right now.

The phone in this one has a great heft to it with a solid metal cradle — it was a gift from Amy Dawson of My Wind Phone. This one was also phone number 25 which is Debbie’s lucky number, so she was very excited!

Debbie will be moving in the next few months, but she is leaving the phone because it is dedicated to Sharon, so she doesn’t want to move it. Because of this, she said it may be taken down, so please keep this in mind when trying to make a visit. She plans to set one up when they move to their new home, but it will be quite a distance from Leitchfield. Great news! The woman who is buying Debbie’s house is going to be adopting the wind telephone as well! It is safe!

To make a wind telephone like this, you will need an old-fashioned glass bottle holder for something like Pepsi or Coca-Cola. Cover any open areas with wood scraps. After any plaques and the phone are attached, simply screw it into the tree as pictured!
